Muliple files automatically open when Excel launches

Document number: 10023

If all or most of your files in a particular directory are automatically opened when Excel is launched, there is an alternate startup path defined for your startup files.

You may also see the errors

Filename : file format is not valid or

This file is not in a recognizable format. (Click this icon for a screenshot: Excel launch error.)

for each file that is not an Excel file.

To resolve this issue, you must remove the alternate startup path. Follow the steps below:

  1. Launch Excel.

  2. Click on the Tools option of the menu bar and select Options...

  3. Click on the General tab.

  4. Make sure that the Alternate Startup File Location: field is blank.
    • Alternatively, if there is an Excel file you always want to open when you launch Excel, you can type in the drive and directory of that file. HOWEVER, make sure that that file is the ONLY one in that directory.

  5. Click on the OK button to save your changes.

  6. Close Excel.

Excel should no longer automatically open multiple files when it is launched.
