Slow performance while Norton Speed Disk runs

If you notice a sudden significant slowdown in the performance of your PeopleSoft machine, the problem may be that Norton Speed Disk is running. The Norton Speed Disk disk optimization process is set to run by default on Wednesdays at noon. When the optimization process is running, you will notice a great amount of disk activity on your machine (hard disk use light flashing, and a "clicking/whirring"-type noise coming from your machine). Nopdb.exe is the process that runs when optimization is taking place. For instructions on how to see if nopdb.exe is running and using up resources on your computer, click here. Important! - Do not interrupt Speed Disk. Although you have the option, there have been problems when you interrupt the process, resulting in boot errors.

To solve your problem, you should not discontinue use of Speed Disk completely, but rather reschedule the disk optimization process to run at a more convenient time. See Eureka! document 15320 — How to change the schedule for Norton Speed Disk.

Is Norton Speed Disk causing my slow down?

To find out if Speed Disk (nopdb.exe) is possibly causing a slowdown of your system, follow these steps:

Press { Ctrl}+{ Alt}+{ Del} once.
The Windows Security screen appears. Click on Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab.
Look for nopdb.exe on the list. You'll see that that process uses a higher amount of disk resources compared to other processes.
- Do NOT click on the End Process button while Speed Disk is running. Interrupting the process has been known to cause boot problems on some machines.
Exit Task Manager by clicking on the "X" at the top right-hand corner of the Task Manager screen.
