Disk optimization utilities and error checking utilities are related but different processes. If you are having performance problems you should run both utilities.

Disk optimization is also call "defragmentation." It improves disk performance by rearranging the way files are stored on the disk. This utility is primarily useful for improving slow performance and resolving error messages related to insufficent memory. The disk defragmentation program does some rudimentary error checking, but should not be considered reliable for repairing disk errors. For Windows 2000, the standard PeopleSoft disk optimization utility is Norton Speed Disk. There are error checking utilities that check for bad sectors and other problems on the disk An error checking utility is primarily useful for trying to resolve error messages without a known fix, and for errors related to reading or writing to the disk (for example, opening a program or document, or trying to save a document). The error checking utility can improve performance by correcting or marking disk problems, but the disk optimization is better for improving speed and memory issues. For both Windows NT and Windows 2000 the error checking utility is Scan Disk.
