Default directory for Microsoft Access databases

Document number: 15101

The default file directory for opening and saving your Microsoft Access databases is c:\User\Access. Whenever you open or save a database, this is the directory in which Microsoft Access will look first.

You may change the default directory if you wish.

To change the default directory to another one, follow these steps:

  1. Open a database.

  2. Click on the T ools menu and then on O ptions...

  3. Click on the General tab.

  4. In the D efault Database Folder: field type in the directory you would like to use as your default. For example, c:\user\admin.
    • Make sure the directory you choose already exists.
    • If you specify a network drive as your default directory and the network is unavailable when you try to open a database in Microsoft Access, it will look on your local hard drive for files. You can navigate to a directory from there.

  5. Click OK to close the Options screen.

Your default drive and directory for opening and saving databases is changed.
