How to save a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation as an earlier version

Document number: 15130

Note: A PowerPoint 2000 presentation can be read by PowerPoint 97 without a specific conversion being done. Later versions of PowerPoint can always read earlier versions of PowerPoint presentations.

To save a Microsoft PowerPoint file for a user with an earlier version of PowerPoint:

  1. Create or open the presentation.

  2. Once the presentation is complete, or you have substantially started it, you may want to save the presentation on your machine, as a backup.

  3. After you save the presentation, click on the F ile menu, then on Save A s...

  4. Choose a directory in which to save the presentation.

  5. In the File name: field, fill in the name of the file.
    • You should use a different name if you saved a backup of the presentation.

  6. In the Save as type: drop-down list, choose the appropriate File type.
    • Remember, PowerPoint 97 users can read PowerPoint 2000 presentations without any special conversion, and vice versa.

Some of the special features available in later versions of Microsoft PowerPoint will be lost in the conversion. For more information about PowerPoint 97's compatibility with PowerPoint 2000, see Eureka! document 15152 — Office 2000 file compatibility with Office 97.
