Windows Installer launches whenever I launch Microsoft Office

Document number: 15168

This is a Level B document - It contains moderately difficult end-user information.

The difficulty you are experiencing is that the Windows Installer Preparing to install... screen appears whenever you launch a Microsoft Office 2000 application. Another screen may also appear that says Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional. However, nothing installs.

To solve this, follow these steps. You may wish to take note of this document's number as you may have to reboot your machine more than once.

  1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.

  2. Install a newer version of the Microsoft Windows Installer:
  3. If the error still appears when you launch a Microsoft Office 2000 application, reinstall Microsoft Office 2000:
    • This installation should NOT be done over RAS, as the package is quite large. It takes about 20 minutes using a PeopleSoft office connection.
    • WARNING: DO NOT UNINSTALL OFFICE 2000 from your machine. Uninstalling has been known to cause problems when users attempt to reinstall after uninstalling.
    • See Eureka! document 15134 — How to install or reinstall Microsoft Office from the Software Library for instructions on reinstalling Office 2000.

  4. If the same error still appears, or a different Windows Installer error appears, when you launch a Microsoft Office 2000 application, check your Windows 2000 Service Pack version. You should be on Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or 4. If you are not on Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or 4, install Windows Service Pack 4:
    • Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 is NOT the same as Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3, so be sure you are checking the right place for the Windows 2000 Service Pack version number. See Eureka! document 69035 — How to find out what Windows Service Pack is loaded.
    • For instructions on how install the latest Windows 2000 Service Pack, see Eureka! document 69026 — Update Service Pack.
    • NOTE: You should install the Windows Service Pack from only a PeopleSoft office connection. It is recommended that you NOT install this package via VPN, as it is a very large a complex package. The package is too large to load over RAS. It takes about an hour to load over an office connection.
    • If you cannot get to a PeopleSoft office, a CD with Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 is available via the PeopleSoft Collateral Center. See Eureka! document 69086 — How to order a Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 CD.
    • If you are not prompted, reboot your machine after installing the Service Pack.

If you are still receiving the error, please contact Technical Support Operations for more possible resolution steps.
