Overview of Symantec AntiVirus

Document number: 15379

NOTE: Legacy PeopleSoft machines built before June 2004 may have Norton AntiVirus version 7.61 or Symantec AntiVirus version 8.0.x. These versions are both standard on those machines, and do not have to upgraded at this time. An organized upgrade of those machines will occur Q3, 2004.

One main feature of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition version 8.1 is File System Realtime Protection. File System Realtime Protection constantly looks for viruses when a file is executed or opened. It also looks for viruses when modifications have been made to a file, such as renaming, saving, moving, or copying a file to and from folders.

Loading the current version

Former J.D. Edwards employees have McAfee antivirus software loaded. An SMS push of the new software will go out to users. Click on this link for a timetable.

Current PeopleSoft machines have either Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition version 7.61 or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition version 8.0.1. They will receive an SMS push of the new version (version 8.1.1) at a later date, according to the timetable below.

McAfee is on machine now - can I load Symantec on my own?

McAfee antivirus software and Symantec antivirus software cannot reside on the same machine. Having both types of software on one machine will result in the need for a rebuild. Please do not load a personal copy of Symantec AntiVirus on your own.

The SMS package will take care of removing McAfee for you before it installs Symantec AntiVirus.

Weekly scan

For Symantec antivirus versions prior to 8.1.1, PeopleSoft utilized a weekly scan called "PeopleScan", which ran on Mondays at noon. Because the implementation of Symantec AntiVirus version 8.1.1 uses RealTime Protection, a weekly scan of your machine is no longer necessary because files are constantly scanned on your machine.

For information on running a manual scan, see Eureka! document 15264 — How to run a manual virus scan in your AntiVirus software.
