How to create folders when saving Microsoft Word document

If you have created a document in Microsoft Word and would like to save it into a folder which currently does not exist, a new one can be created when you save the Word document. You can also create new folders through My Computer.

Once a folder has been created, you can save documents in it by selecting its path when doing a Save As... in Microsoft Word.

To save a document into a new folder while in Microsoft Word:

  1. Select File from the menu bar.

  2. Select Save As... from the drop down menu.

  3. Check the folder showing in the Save in: field. If the folder showing is not where you want the new folder to be located, click the down arrow and highlight C: to show all main folders on your hard drive. If the new one should be a subfolder within another folder, open the main folder by double-clicking on it.

  4. Select the Create New Folder button .

  5. In the Name: field, type the name of the new folder and click on OK. The new folder has now been created.

  6. Open the new folder by double clicking on it. No documents will show as nothing has been saved there yet.

  7. Type the name of the file for the word document in the File name: field and click on Save.

The document has now been saved in the new folder.

To create a new folder using My Computer:

  1. Launch My Computer from your Windows Desktop.

  2. Highlight C:\ if you want the folder to be a main folder on the hard drive. If it is a subfolder of another folder, open the folder you want to create the new one in.

  3. Select File from the menu bar.

  4. Select Ne w from the drop down menu.

  5. Select Folder from the next drop down menu and the new folder is created.

  6. Type the name of the new folder in the field next to the folder icon ("New Folder" is highlighted) and press the { Enter} key.

The new folder now exists and future documents can be saved in it.
