Mail Encryption Failure when sending Internet mail in Lotus Notes

Document number: 16084

The following Mail Encryption Failure pop up window appears when trying to send Internet mail in Lotus Notes because your mail preferences are set to encrypt sent mail. The Internet mail gateway cannot encrypt messages.

The following is the entire message in the Mail Encryption Failure pop up window:

If you choose to continue sending, the following recipient(s) will receive an unencrypted copy of the message:
[Name of person/people sending Internet mail to]
Mail encryption failed for this recipient because
This recipient's public key could not be found in the Address book.

If you want to continue having your internally sent mail to be encrypted, click the OK to Send button. If you leave the setting to encrypt internally sent mail, the pop up window will always appear when you send Internet mail.

If you do not need your internally sent mail to be encrypted and do not want the pop up window to appear each time you send Internet mail, you need to change your mail preferences so that sent mail is not encrypted.

For information on how to change your mail preferences so that sent mail is not encrypted, click here.

To change your mail preferences so that sent mail is not encrypted:

  1. Select File from the menu bar.

  2. Select Preferences from the drop down menu and select User Preferences... from the next drop down menu.

  3. Click on Mail and News in the left hand panel.

  4. Under Sending, click the box next to Encrypt sent mail so there is no longer a checkmark.

  5. Click OK.

The mail preferences have now been changed so that sent mail is no longer encrypted.

The pop up message window will no longer appear when sending Internet mail.
