Unable to receive e-mail from external source

Document number: 16152

Some people may report that external sources are no longer able to send e-mail to PeopleSoft. The external sender will either receive a delivery failure with any number of messages or a notification that the message was identified as SPAM.

If the sender receives a delivery failure it may be a block that occurs because the numeric IP address of the sender's outbound Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) gateway cannot be translated into a human-readable host name via reverse DNS (Domain Name Service). Reverse DNS is becoming an industry standard. PeopleSoft uses forward DNS which is where the host name is translated into an IP address. If external mail has been sent from PeopleSoft and the recipient's inbound SMTP gateway requires a reverse DNS, mail sent from PeopleSoft should be able to connect as we provide reverse DNS for our Internet facing machines. If the issue is because the sender's company is not using reverse DNS, PeopleSoft will be able to work with their network administrator to assist them in utilizing it.

To report an issue where an external source is trying to e-mail to PeopleSoft and it is being rejected, contact Technical Support Operations or open a NorthStar ticket. For additional information, see Eureka! document 16226 — How to report SPAM related issues in Lotus Notes.
