The Grammar Checker in Microsoft Word enables you to check your document for possible errors in sentence structure and style.
To use the Grammar Checker:
- From the main toolbar, select
Tools.
- Select
Spelling and Grammar from the drop down list.
- If the Grammar Checker discovers a questionable sentence, a dialog box will open with the questionable words highlighted.
- The following options are available when a dialog box opens:

Ignore: |
Ignores the highlighted words. |
|
Ignore Rule: |
Ignores other instances of the same potential rule violation. |
|
Next sentence: |
Skips to the next sentence without making any changes. |
|
Explain: |
This will give you an explanation of the grammar rule being applied. |
|
Options: |
Allows you to select different grammar styles and rules. |
To customize Grammar Checker:
- From the main toolbar, select
Tools.
- Select
Options from the drop down list.
- Click on the
Spelling & Grammar tab.
- Click on the
Se
ttings button.
- If you want to build your custom rule group from an existing set of rules, select the
Custom rule set from the drop down list of
Writing Style text box at the top of the Grammar Settings box. By default, all options will be selected.
- Select or clear the rules for Grammar and Style you want to include or disregard by clicking in the check boxes in the
Grammar and style
options section.
- Click on the
OK button to save your changes to the Customized Grammar Checker.
