How to disable IIS

Document number: 19021

By default IIS is installed to start-up on boot. This behavior is not always desirable. To avoid internet worms and viruses it may be advisable to have specific control over when the service is running, and to not have the service automatically restart on reboot. To change the start-up settings so that IIS does not automatically start up follow the instructions below. If you have Windows 2000 and you don't need to use IIS (webserver) go to the Software Library page Microsoft IIS 5.0 and uninstall it. The page also has a button you can use to find out if you have IIS installed in the first place. (It is installed by default on some builds, but not on others).

How can you tell whether you need webserver to be active? If you are making your machine accessible to others to fetch documents using the http:// protocol then you need the webserver to be active. If your work requires that you access files using the http:// protocol then you need the webserver to be active. IIS is used by Peoplesoft Standalone applications. So if you installed Tools standalone package's from the software library then you use it. Although a webserver is installed by default on most Windows 2000 machines most people do not need the service to be active. If you have not been aware of using a webserver you probably do not need it to be active.
