Internet Explorer Runtime error. Do you wish to debug?
When you are using Internet Explorer you may encounter an error message similar to Runtime error has occurred. Do you wish do debug? or Class does not support automation.
This error message is usually a problem with the script on the page, not your browser. It could be that there is a problem with the script, or it could be that the script is expecting some information that it is not getting (permissions, data, it could be anything) from you or from your browser. The right solution requires learning whether the problem lies with the script itself or with your browser's interaction with the script.
Clear your cache and try again
Internet Explorer may be using some old files from its cache instead of retrieving newer versions from the site. Try clearing your cache of temporary internet files and then refresh the page view.
Testing whether the problem is the script.
See if another person with equal access rights to the site gets the same error on the same page.
To test this you need to make sure that the script warning options on the test machine are turned on. It is best to do this through Control Panel before actually opening the brower.
To check the status of the warnings:
Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Go to Start, then Control Panel.
Double-click the Internet Options icon.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Under the Browsing category make sure that " Disable script debugging" is not checked and " Display a notification about every script error" is checked.
Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
- Open Internet Explorer and attempt to access the site. If the test machine gets the same message then it is a script problem.
If the problem is the script.
The page owner needs to be notified. getting the error means we (PeopleSoft) need to correct or improve our script coding. Some of the errors it reacts to are minor but they are errors and we should clean them up, not ignore them. So report it.
If it is a PeopleSoft site submit a NorthStar ticket providing the following information: The exact error message text, a description of what page was showing when the error occured (ideally including the URL) and the icon or link you clicked on (again ideally including the URL) of the page or script attempted to be loaded. A screen shot is extremely useful.
You can ignore the error message by just clicking " No" to the "Do you wish to debug?" question.. Other similar boxes will appear if there are multiple errors on the page, you can answer "No" to each.
If the problem is your browser's interaction with the script.
Try these solutions:
Reinstall the Microsoft Virtual Machine.
Reinstall the Visual Basic Runtime files
If the script warnings are annoying and you want to turn them off.
You can turn the warnings off. There are downsides to doing so.
First, it can inhibit your ability to contribute to the improvement of our applications. Finding and fixing script errors is important. Sometimes script errors occur only under certain conditions. Learning that and addressing it is important.
Second, it can impair troubleshooting. If a page isn't working correctly for you and your script warnings are turned off it will be much more difficult to identify and resolve the issue. If you choose to turn them off be sure to turn script warnings back on to do any troubleshooting relating to page access, script performance, blank areas on a page and similar issues.
To turn off the warnings:
Open Internet Explorer.
From the menu bar select Tools
Select Internet Options
Click on the Advanced tab.
Under the Browsing category select (check) " Disable script debugging" and unselect (uncheck) " Display a notification about every script error."
NOTE: This only resolves the fact that you are getting the message. It does not fix the problem.
If the steps above do not resolve your problem and you are getting the message while using a particular application try uninstalling and reinstalling that application.
