ERROR: System Log Full

Document number: 28023

If you are getting the error " System Log file is full" during boot-up of a Windows NT system (either server or workstation), you must clear out the system event log.

Windows NT defines an event as any significant occurrence in the system or in an application that users should be aware of and perhaps notified about.

The system log keeps track of events logged by the Windows NT system components, such as a driver or other system component which failed to load during startup.

On Windows 2000 the application log can be cleared out by doing the following:

  1. Click on the Start button on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Select Settings from the pop-up list.
  3. Select Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Adminitrative Tools icon to open it.
  5. Select Event Viewer.
  6. Click once on System Log to select it.
  7. You will get a pop up box asking if you want to save the system log before clearing it. In most cases you will answer No. However, if you have been having problems and you want someone to review the System Log, you can answer Yes and you will get the normal "Save file" dialog boxes. You will need to navigate to some folder other than the default folder as the default folder is protected.
  8. A dialog box will open advising that all events will be lost, that the action is irreversible, and asking for confirmation.  Select Yes.

This will clear and reset the system events log.

If the above steps did not correct the problem you will need open a NorthStar ticket to make an appointment for service. Be sure to include your contact number. Describe the problem in detail, especially the steps you took to try to correct the problem. You will be contacted by the appropriate party. For more information on creating the NorthStar ticket, see Eureka! document 39068 — How to submit a computer or peripheral for repair.
