The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction

The error “ 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem c:\winnt\System32\cmd.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f0 37 05 0c 02 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. ” can occur in a variety of circumstances while running DOS based applications.

It has been noted to occur after installing PC-Duo 6.1. In most cases you can work through the error message. One way of getting rid of the error message is to un-install PC-Duo 6.1. See Eureka! document 69004 — How to uninstall and install software.

You may also want to experiment with the display settings. This is especially important for laptops in which there really is only one optimal resolution display size - all others are done in "virtual mode" and may cause conflicts with certain applications. Attempting to use the .EXE extension for a script file will result in the error message: NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. If you are running a custom script you should use the .exe extension only for true executables, otherwise the extension should be .bat or .cmd. See Microsoft article Q102907.
