How to reinstall sound drivers

Document number: 39015

If your sound drivers are missing or corrupt they will need to be replaced.  This is the least frequent cause of sound problems. If you have no sound on your system it could be that the sound has been muted by resetting either the virtual or physical volume controls, or diverted by plugging in headphones or external speakers.   Before proceeding with the instructions below be sure you have reviewed document 30004 — Troubleshooting "sound" problems. If you are still not getting sound after taking the troubleshooting steps then try reinstalling your sound drivers.

  1. Click on the Start button, then S ettings, then Control Panel.

  2. Select Administrative Tools

  3. Select Computer Management

  4. Select Device Manager

  5. Look under Sound, Video and Game Controllers for entries beginning with Yamaha. If they don't exist then likely the sound card is faulty and the machine needs repair.

  6. Highlight the Yamaha entries. Press the { Delete} key. If there are no Yamaha entries then delete all the entries in the list.

  7. Confirm that you want to delete.

  8. Shutdown and power off.

  9. Allow the Hardware wizard to attempt to locate and install the sound drivers..

  10. If you still have problems, click on the Troubleshoot... button and follow the instructions.

If the above steps did not correct the problem open a NorthStar ticket to make an appointment for service. Be sure to include your contact number. Describe the problem in detail, especially the steps you took to try to correct the problem. You will be contacted by the appropriate party. For more information on creating the NorthStar ticket, see Eureka! document 39068 — How to submit a computer or peripheral for repair.
