How to install the Palm organizer.
Installing the Palm Pilot on your desktop is fairly straightforward. In most cases you will be accepting the default and simply clicking the "Next" button. Here are some preliminary tips:
If you have been using your mouse on the serial port of your NT machine you will not be able to continue using it. You should disable the serial mouse. For instructions on disabling the serial mouse see document 29003 — ERROR: Driver=SERMOUSE failed to load. If you have Windows 2000 it should be able to detect whether you have the serial mouse attached, or the Pilot cradle attached, so you so not need to disable the serial mouse on Windows 2000.
If you want to use a mouse try obtaining a PS/2 port Y splitter from a computer equipment supplier e.g. CompUSA. Then you can plug your mouse and keyboard into the same port, freeing the serial port for the Palm Pilot. If your manager approves you can order a Y splitter using NorthStar web. See document 75090 — How to order a Y-splitter.
If you use a Y splitter and it doesn't work the first time try switching the keyboard and mouse plugs. That is, connect the keyboard to the plug marked "mouse" and the mouse to the plug marked "keyboard." Also make sure the mouse you are using can be used on the PS2 port. For more information see document 32006 — External mouse not working - use correct mouse type.
If you don't have the CD-ROM you can get the HotSync software from the Software Libarary or from http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/. For Software Library information see document 39049 — How to install IntelliSync for the Palm organizer.
The install software you use may differ slightly so the instructions below may not exactly match what you see. What you do need to know is to not install the mail component, so watch for a "Select components" screen. If you are given a choice for Com ports you should select Com1 because your modem most likely uses Com2.
To install the Palm Pilot software from the CD-ROM:
Close all open programs.
Shut down and power off the machine.
Attach the Palm cradle to the serial port. Make sure the Palm has fresh batteries. Do not put the Palm in the cradle yet.
Restart your machine and log in.
Insert the CD-ROM in the CD drive.
The Palm Desktop Installer Menu should appear. If it does not appear then open Windows Explorer, go to your CD-ROM drive and click on the " Autorun.exe" file.
Click on Install.
Click on Next.
A pre-installation window will open advising you of the steps above. Click on Next.
A " Select Components" window will open. This is to install optional components.
Be sure to remove the check mark next to " Mail (requires supported e-mail application"). This will prevent conflicts with later installation of synchronizing software that is compatible with Lotus Notes.
Click on Next.
A " Choose Destination Location" window will open. Accept the default. Click on Next.
A " Select Program Folder" will open. You can accept the default under Program Folders or click on one of the E xisting Folders if you prefer. Click on Next.
A " Create User Account" window will open. Type in your name. You probably want to use your Lotus Notes name. Click on Next.
A " Serial Port Setup" window will open. Put the Palm in the HotSync cradle. Click on OK.
If a message opens that Setup was unable to detect your HotSync cradle, it should provide you a list of available serial ports, select Com1.
You may get an error message " Cannot install Excel Macro in C:\Apps\Office97\Office\xlstart. Your C:\Apps\Office97\Office\xlstart directory may be read only. PALMAPPXLT will be copied to C:\Palm. Refer to the README.TXT for more information. This is normal.Click on OK.
The installation process will begin. If you get port errors at this time and your are installing to a desktop machine see document 39047 — Reconfigure Port Settings in Bios of Toshiba Equium.
Click on Finish.
That should complete the installation of your HotSync software. That will allow synchronize entries you make via the Palm with your computer and vice versa. This will not synchronize with your Lotus Notes calendar or address book. To synchronize with Lotus Notes you can try installing IntelliSync. For information on installing IntelliSync see document 39049 — How to install IntelliSync for the Palm organizer.
