Windows 2000 is a "plug and play" system which means that in most cases it can recognize and configure hardware on its own.  If your mouse isn't working the first step would be to check that you have the right mouse attached and that it is working properly.  See document 39021 — How to troubleshoot mouse problems. If that does not resolve the problem try forcing installation of the serial mouse.  If you are having port conflicts you may need to uninstall the serial mouse.

Click on the operation you would like to do:

• Install the serial mouse on Windows 2000.

• Uninstall the serial mouse on Windows 2000.

If that does not resolve your problem , contact Technical Support Operations.

Install the serial mouse on Windows 2000.

1. Make sure the mouse is attached to the serial port.

2. Click on the Start button, then S ettings, then Control Panel.

3. Double-click on the Mouse icon to open it.

4. A Mouse Properties window will open. Click the Hardware tab.

5. Allow the Hardware wizard to attempt to locate and install the mouse.

6. If the mouse is not installed automatically. Click on the Troubleshoot... button and follow the instructions.

Uninstall the serial mouse on Windows 2000.

1. Click on the Start button, then S ettings, then Control Panel.

2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Hardware icon to open it.

3. A Add/Remove Hardware Wizard will open. Click  Next.

4. Click on Uninstall/unplug a device. Click  Next.

5. Click on Uninstall device. Click  Next.

6. Scroll down the list of devices and select Standard Serial Mouse. Click  Next.

7. Click on the Yes, I want to uninstall this device. Click  Next.

8. Click Finish to close the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard.
