Starting with a never used Palm

The Palm organizer functions as a calendar, appointment book, address book, to-do list and more. It can run a number of specialized applications and programs. The purpose this document is simply to get you started. It will be up to you to learn the details. A Palm that has never been used, or that has been reset to factory conditions will behave differently that a Palm that has been through an initial set-up. Here is what you need to get started:

The Palm organizer, including the stylus. The stylus is used to activate various points on the touch screen and enter information into your Palm.
Two fresh AAA batteries for the Palm III. The Palm V's rechargeable batteries must be charged before use.
The Palm cradle. This is how you synchronize with your computer, and charge the batteries on the Palm V. Note: Windows NT4 does not support USB. If you have a USB cradle and your operating system is Windows NT you will need to purchase a serial port cradle.
The CD-ROM for installing the Palm Desktop software.
Network access if you are going to install the IntelliSync software for synchronizing with your Lotus Notes calendar.

The main tasks are (1) setup the palm device for use (2) setup synchronization with your primary computer, (3) install synchronization software for Lotus Notes. These three tasks do not need to be done at the same time but they must be done in that order.

Initial set-up for the Palm.

When you open your Palm the screen has two areas, both are touch sensitive. You can make selections in the display area by touching the item with the point of the stylus. The other area has the primary selections, and an area for writing characters.
Provide power.

Install the batteries (Palm III)

Press the latch on the battery compartment then lift the cover off away from the Palm.
A diagram on the bottom of the compartment should show the correct orientation for the batteries.
Insert the bottom of the battery compartment lid at an angle and then press the door down firmly so that it "clicks" into place.

Charge the batteries (Palm V)

Plug the cradle into a power outlet.
Put the Palm V in the cradle. Make sure the green LED goes on.
Leave it to charge for 4 hours. Recharging later will take much less time, minutes instead of hours. Note: you don't need to have the cradle attached to a serial port to charge the batteries.

Calibrate the touch screen. When you first turn on the Palm a calibration screen will appear. If the calibration screen did not appear, click here for instructions on finding it.
1. A star shaped picture will appear in one corner. It has a dot in the middle. Tap the point of the stylus on that dot (target).
2. The star will move to different locations. Each time it moves tap once on the dot in the middle.
3. The calibration screen will clear automatically when you are finished.
Set the date and time. The next screen that should appear is the General Preferences screen.

Set the time.

Use your stylus to tap the Set Time box, A Set Time Dialog box should open.
Tap the up or down arrows to change the hour.
Tap the minutes box, then tap the up or down arrows to set the minutes.
Tap the AM or PM box to select the time of day.

Set the date.

Use your stylus to tap the Set Date box, A Set Date Dialog box should open.
Tap the left or right arrows to select the current year.
Tap the current month, then tap the current date.
