How to reinstall CD-ROM/DVD drivers

Document number: 39071

If the CD-ROM/DVD doesn't work, it may be necessary to reload the original CD-ROM/DVD drivers. This is particularly likely to be necessary if the CD-ROM/DVD was working but no longer works after installing new CD-ROM/DVD software. DVD is not supported. The CD-ROM is supported. So if your only problem is that you cannot view DVD you can try the solutions but there is no additional support.

Please be sure to review the documents 39040 — Troubleshooting CD-ROM problems and 39062 — DVD is not supported, CD-ROM only.

  1. Click on the Start button, then S ettings, then Control Panel.

  2. Select Administrative Tools

  3. Select Computer Management

  4. Select Device Manager

  5. Look under DVD/CD/ROM drives

  6. Highlight the driver entry (probably TOSHIBA DVD-ROM ....) then press the { Delete} key. Don't delete the "folder" called DVD/CD/ROM drives

  7. Confirm that you want to delete. If there is more than one entry then delete each entry.

  8. Shutdown and power off.

  9. Make sure the DVD/CD-ROM is properly seated and locked. If you need help you can look at screenshots or download a user manual from the Eureka! document on Your New Laptop.

  10. Reboot. The hardware wizard should find and reinstall the drivers.

That should resolve the problem.

Remember the DVD portion is not supported. Additional service is available only if you cannot use the CD-ROM. If the above steps did not correct the problem with the CD-ROM open a NorthStar ticket to make an appointment for service. Be sure to include your contact number. Describe the problem in detail, especially the steps you took to try to correct the problem. You will be contacted by the appropriate party. For more information on creating the NorthStar ticket, see Eureka! document 39068 — How to submit a computer or peripheral for repair.
