The pictures below are the Blackberry 7210 from AA&T Wireless.  Other models will differ in the locations of some of the keys, ports and buttons but the general functionality is the same. Put your cursor on a feature to get a quick tip on that feature.  Click on it to link to a bit more information.

 

• Turn on the Blackberry by pressing the power button in the lower right hand corner of the keyboard. Press and hold the power switch to shutdown and turn off the Blackberry.

• The trackwheel on the right hand edge moves the cursor and makes selections. Use your thumb to roll the wheel up or down to move the cursor. To make a selection press the trackwheel in toward the machine.

• The escape button on the right hand edge below the trackwheel takes you back to the prior screen.

• The alt key changes the way some of the other keys operate.  For example, pressing the alt key then one of the numeric keys will type the number shown on the upper part of the key. Holding the alt key together with the trackwheel changes scroll direction from up and down to left to right.. (click on image for larger view) To copy text from a message press the ALT key and click the trackwheel. Scroll to highlight your selection. Click the trackwheel again.

• Numeric keys are accessed either by turning on a function, such as the calculator, or by pressing the alt key before typing the numeric key.

• The left shift key capitalizes the next letter key that is typed.  Holding the shift key down while scrolling with the trackwheel selects text.

• The right shift key capitalizes the next letter key that is typed.  Holding the shift key down while scrolling with the trackwheel selects text.

• The backspace key  erases text to the left. Hold the alt key and its a delete key erasing text to the right.

• The symbol key brings up a screen with a variety of commonly used typographical symbols.  Press the letter key corresponding to the symbol to insert it into your document.

• The return key inserts a new line or makes a selection on a highlighted item.

• Hold the alt key and press the forward key to move the cursor to the right.

• Hold the alt key and press the back key   to move the cursor to the left.

• The space key inserts a space when pressed once.  When pressed twice it ends a sentence, inserting a period, then a space and capatilizing the next character typed (if it is a letter).

• The headset jack is on the left edge.

• The USB port  for connecting the Blackberry to the PC or battery charger is on the left edge.

• The Battery cover is on the back.  To open it press down on the battey cover release button and slide the battey cover away from the device.

• The microphone for the telephone is on the bottom edge.

• The speaker for the telephone is on the front near the top.

• The phone button is on the top edge.

•   The notification LED is on the top edge.  It will blink when new messages have been delivered to your device.

The Display Screen

The signal information display  shows whether the radio is on or off, the strength of signal it is receiving, and the type of signal received. .

The power information display shows the amount of battery power remaining and whether it is currently charging.

The message information display shows how many messages are waiting and whether there are mail or phone messages waiting.

The time and date display should synchronize with your PC.

The selection display shows the name of the selected icon or menu choice.
