The Blackberry handheld provides wireless access to email, phone, internet, and corporate data. It functions (depending upon model) as a cell phone calendar, appointment book, address book, to-do list and more. It can run a number of specialized applications and programs. The purpose this document is simply to get you started. It will be up to you to learn the details. A Blackberry that has never been used, or that has been reset to factory conditions will behave differently that a Blackberry that has been through an initial set-up.

Here is what you need to get started:

The Blackberry handheld and the USB cable for connecting it to your computer.
Your software set-up instructions from the e-mail accepting you into the Blackberry program and network access to do the install.
The battery pack if it has not already been installed.

The main tasks are (1) setup the device for use (2) install the desktop software (3) setup synchronization with your primary computer. These three tasks do not need to be done at the same time but they must be done in that order.

Initial set-up for the Blackberry.

Try turning on the Blackberry by pressing the power button in the lower right hand corner of the keyboard.
If it does not turn on check to see if the battery is installed.

Turn the Blackberry over. Put your thumb on the battery cover release button. Push slightly down and slide the cover away from the Blackberry. Sometimes it helps to use your thumb nail on the ridges. Also using a finger to gently push from the top of the cover can help.
Install the battery, if needed, by tilting slightly as you insert it with the connectors on the battery aligned with the connectors on the device. Be sure to use only the batteries delivered with the device, or compareable. Be very careful about subsitute batteries as many reports of damage to the device occur because of poorly made battery packs.

Slide the battery compartment lid in at an angle and then press the door down firmly so that it "clicks" into place.
Shut down and power off your computer. Plug one end of the USB cord into the USB port on your computer. (Locations of the USB port for many models of PeopleSoft issued computers can be found in the Eureka document on Your new Laptop). Plug the other end into the port on the Blackberry. Let the device charge for at least four hours. Recharging later will take much less time, minutes instead of hours.
Install Blackberry Desktop software according to instructions received when you are added to the Blackberry program.
