How to add a network printer by name

There are 2 ways to map a network printer. The first may be used for PeopleSoft printers only, not in a former J.D. Edwards office (see Eureka! document 45009 — How to find a network printer to map to your computer), and the other method, documented below, requires that you know the full network name of the printer and should work on any network printer.

To add or map a network printer to your system by name, first find out the name of a printer by walking over to the printer and writing down the name that has been taped to the printer. The format for a network printer should look something like this: \\psp-print-02\P16 . In some former J.D. Edwards offices, the format may look like the following (no slashes): psp-print-02 p16. Users should add the backslashes as appropriate, e.g., type in \\psp-print-02\P16.

Follow these steps ( Note: These are steps for Windows 2000):

Make sure that you have the name of the printer written down correctly.
Click on Start, then Settings, then Printers, then double-click the Add Printer icon.
In the Add Printer Wizard window, click on Next.
In the next window (Local or Network Printer), select Network printer and then click on Next.
In the next window (Locate Your Printer), make sure Type the printer name, or click Next to browse for a printer is selected and type the name of the printer in the field provided. Example: \\psp-print-02\p16 .
- If you type in the name, be sure to type in backslashes before the server name and printer name. The backslash is above the { Enter} key.
Next, you may see a window (Default Printer) asking you to select Yes or No to use this printer as the default. Chose one answer and click on Next.
The next screen shows whether you are successful and gives you the complete information on the printer you just mapped.
Click Finish to complete the process.

The printer is now mapped and is ready for use.
