How to access the network using RAS or Dial-Up Networking

Document number: 50015

Note: The legacy RAS (dial-up networking) and PeopleSoft RAS Connection Manager (also known as PSRC or PSRCM) are in the process of being retired. To standardize dial-up access, the integrated PeopleSoft company is deploying iPass and VPN as the dial-up solution. For more information, see Eureka! document 54040 — iPass Frequently Asked Questions.

This document applies to legacy PeopleSoft machines and machines built after June 19, 2004.

You can dial into the network using your laptop computer's modem. The technology used is Remote Access Service (RAS). Once you've dialed in, your computer works just as if you're on-site, except that things move a little slower.

Generally, RAS permissions are given only to PeoplePeople, not PeopleFriends (Contractors). If a Contractor requires RAS access, the manager must make and approve the request. The request may be made via NorthStar.

If this is the first time you are RASing in from your present phone number, please use PS RAS Connection Manager to choose a number and dial in (see Eureka! document 55092 — How to use PS RAS Connection Manager.) Then use the steps below for your next RAS session from that phone number.

The Windows logon screen allows you to RAS into to the network by checking Log on using dial-up connection on the logon screen. Checking that box will fully authenticate you on the network, and should be used where possible. To access the PeopleSoft network via RAS, follow these steps:

  1. Plug your modem into an analog phone line.
  2. If you have logged onto the machine locally already ( i.e., you didn't check the box next to Logon using dial-up connection and have been working on your machine), reboot your machine to avoid any problems with logging onto the PeopleSoft network via RAS.

  3. When the Windows logon screen appears, click the box next to Logon using dial-up connection on the logon screen so that a checkmark appears.

  4. Enter your network User name and Password. Then make sure that PEOPLESOFT appears in the Log on to: field.

  5. Click OK.

  6. The "Network and Dial-up Connections" list screen appears. From the Choose a network connection: list, choose PS Connection and click Dial.

  7. The "Connect PS Connection" screen appears. In the Dial: field, make sure you have entered any numbers you need to dial out of the building you're presently in e.g., a "9" often must be entered before your phone number to dial out of most hotels. If there are numbers missing, you can type them directly into the Dial: field.

  8. When you are finished checking the number to be dialed, click the Dial button.

  9. As your modem makes the connection, you will hear the number being dialed through your computer's speaker (make sure you don't have the speaker blocked or the volume turned too low), along with some other noises which will indicate a successful connection being made. You will also see several pop-up progress messages.

  10. Finally, when all of your logon procedures are complete, a small icon with 2 terminals appears in your system tray. It looks like this: ras2000.gif (916 bytes)
Remember that performance of network functions is much slower over RAS than a direct network connection from your PeopleSoft office, so be patient while working on the network.

To end the session, right-click on the icon in your system tray described above and choose Disconnect.
