The following steps will walk you through using Phone Dialer to test your modem

1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories.

2. Select Communications and choose Phone Dialer. This will launch the Phone Dialer application.

3. Click the Dial button and choose Phone Call.

4. Enter your cell phone number, or a local number that will ring when dialed. (If you are calling from a hotel or office setting, you may need to include the digits to get an outside phone like, such as a 9, for example: 9 694 3000)

5. Click Place Call.

If you modem dialing the number, the modem is working. (The Phone Dialer will also display a "Phone Call" window that shows status, if your machine either does not have the sound turned up, or you cannot hear the dialing.)
