Lotus Notes or Planet inaccessible via VPN - Set MTU

Document number: 54112

When using the Cisco VPN client software in combination with DSL software from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you may find Lotus Notes or Planet is not fully accessible, there appears to be no response, or similar behavior. Some DSL software applications from ISPs has been known to cause this type of interruption, based on how the DSL software is sending data using your personal DSL line.

Note: If you are experiencing performance issues with Lotus Notes while using VPN and iPass through a dial-up number, see Eureka! document 54122 — VPN profiles for dial-up iPass with slow Notes issues.

To resolve this issue, you may reset the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) values for Cisco using the following steps:

  1. Click on the Start menu, then on Programs, then Cisco VPN, and finally, Set MTU.

  2. A Cisco Systems Set MTU window will open.

  3. Highlight the "Local Area Connection" listed in the "Network Adapters (IPSec only)" section. The MTU Options will become available. By default, the Cisco VPN client is set to Default. (If there is more than one "Local Area Connection" listed, you must make this next change for all the connections. They must each be done individually; you cannot change all of them at once.)

  4. Change the Default option to another value; the 576 option will generally resolve the issue initially. (If it does not, you can try using the value of 1300, and use the Custom radio button to enter a value between 68 and 1500, if needed.)

Note: While 576 works in most circumstances, the setting may need to be lower or higher. You can fine tune the MTU setting for exactly what your connection requires by following the instructions in Eureka! document 55173 — How to determine your MTU setting for VPN.

  5. Click OK.

  6. You will be prompted to reboot in order for the changes to be applied; click OK to the prompt box.

  7. Reboot your machine before testing the changes. (The Cisco VPN software will not automatically reboot your machine.)

Your access to Lotus Notes and/or Planet should now work properly.
