How to configure Cisco VPN to log into the network automatically

Document number: 54119

You may set up the Cisco VPN client software on your machine to start the VPN connection before you log into the machine. This will allow network authentication and password synchronization between your machine and the network.

To use this method to log onto the network, you must have a SecurID token (see Eureka! document 55063 — How to request a RSA SecurID token) and you must have set up a PIN (see Eureka! document 55147 — Set SecurID token PIN via the internet).

Some ISPs require you to log in via their software before allowing you to use your high-speed connection that they provide. The steps below may not work for machines with that configuration.

To set your machine up to use this feature, click below on the link for the version of Cisco you have loaded on your machine. To find out what version you have, see Eureka! document 55175 — How to tell what version of Cisco VPN software you are using

Cisco client version 4.0.1
Cisco client versions 3.6.3 and 3.5.2
Click-to-connect internet connection.

Note: This only applies to machines that already have an internet connection prior to logging into the machine. These steps do not apply to users of iPass or broadband connection that require steps to connect to your ISP after logging onto the machine.

Cisco client version 4.0.1

Note: If you used this feature with the previous version of Cisco, please note that the initial screen takes a little longer to come up than before. Also, the VPN screen will come up on the lower left hand corner of your screen, rather than the middle. If you are in the office or do not want to launch VPN, you can immediately enter your Windows logon information and the VPN screen will not get in your way.

Follow these steps to set up your machine to log in to the network automatically. It doesn't matter if you are currently logged in to the PeopleSoft network via VPN.

  1. Click on the Start menu, then Programs, then Cisco VPN, and finally, VPN Client.

  2. Click on the Options menu, and select Windows Logon Properties...
    • If the "Windows Logon Properties" is not one of the choices on the Options menu, click on Advanced Mode. Then click on the Options menu again and select Windows Logon Properties...

  3. On the Windows Logon Properties screen, check the first box, "Enable start before logon" and click OK.

You will not see the change until you next log into your machine (either by logging off Windows and relogging on, or rebooting your machine).

When you boot up your machine and press the { Ctrl},{ Alt}, and { Del}keys, wait for a few seconds and the VPN client connection screen appears, usually at the lower left hand corner of your screen. If you choose to ignore the screen, it will disappear once you log in to Windows.

If you are connected to the network directly or do not want to use VPN when you boot up, you can close or ignore that screen. If you do want to use VPN to log into the network, the steps to log in will change slightly:

  1. Press the { Ctrl},{ Alt} and { Del} keys simultaneously to login. The Cisco VPN login screen will appear (it may take a few moments after you boot up initially).

  2. Press the Connect button and then log into the PeopleSoft VPN server. (For help with how to log in using the Cisco VPN client software, see Eureka! document 54109 — How to login using the Cisco VPN client.)

  3. Once the VPN session has started, click Continue to acknowledge the "Authorized Use" dialog box.

  4. You will now see the Windows login screen for the network; enter your network password that you would normally use.

  5. If you are a legacy PeopleSoft employee, once you enter your network password and log in, you may see a series of 4 messages. Those messages are normal. Click here to see Eureka! document 55029 — ERROR: Unable to locate... P: drive not correctly attached... VPN users.

You should be successfully connected to the PeopleSoft network via VPN. Legacy PeopleSoft employees: You may need to map your N: or P: drive manually.
