How to request a backup or restore of a server

To request a backup or restore of a server or to modify a backup profile at the corporate sites open a NorthStar ticket. For more information on how to open a NorthStar ticket on the web, see Eureka! document 70001 — How to create a ticket in NorthStar.

Modification of existing backup for a server:

Example of modification: changing  the directory on the server to be backed up. Be sure to include the full path of the directory in the Description of the ticket.

Data restores:

Special information for a restore request - be sure to include this information in the Description field of your ticket.

  • The server name, path and date of lost data.
  • If the data is not to be restored to its original place, specify the server and path to restore the information to.

Request for backup of a server:

Here are the steps to create this specific type of ticket on NorthStar on the web:

  1. Launch NorthStar and log in, if necessary.

  2. On the left side of the screen, click on the Log Service Ticket link.

  3. On the contact screen, make sure the information is current and indicate how you would like to be contacted if there are any questions (the default is by phone, based on your internal phone number in the PeoplePeople Directory.)

  4. Click Next.

  5. Choose Other Service Request and click Next.
  6. For the question "What type of problem are you having?" choose Network.

  7. For the question "What operating system are you using" choose the operating system of the server.

  8. For the question "How are you connecting?" choose Network/Ethernet

  9. In the Symptom field, type I need a backup of a server.

  10. In the Description field, you MUST include the following information.
    • Full name of server to be backed up. Example: \\ple-share-01
    • Path including drives to be backed up. Example: d$, \\ple-share-01\c$\cbr, \\ple-share-01\c$\cdfs
    • Server Operating System. Example: Windows 2000
    • Server's IP address (if available).
    • Retention Requirements. This indicates how long you need the backed up files retained. The options available are 5 weeks, 6 months, and 13 months.

  11. Click Finish.

Once you submit your request, you will receive notification that your ticket has been completed and closed, or you will be contacted for more information.
