Modems connecting ... Error 638: The request has timed out
Note: The legacy RAS (dial-up networking) and PeopleSoft RAS Connection Manager (also known as PSRC or PSRCM) are in the process of being retired. To standardize dial-up access, the integrated PeopleSoft company is deploying iPass and VPN as the dial-up solution. For more information, see Eureka! document 54040 — iPass Frequently Asked Questions.
The error Modems connecting ... Error 638: The request has timed out appears when you are trying to log onto the PeopleSoft network via RAS on a Windows NT 4 machine by checking Logon using Dial-up Networking on the logon screen. (You first get the message Modems connecting..., but get no dial tone. Then, after about a minute or two, the message above appears. You may then be brought back to the Begin Logon screen.) The message appears because you have chosen the O perator assisted or manual dialing option in dial-up networking.
To solve this, follow these steps:
On the logon screen, enter your network password and check the box next to Logon using Dial-up Networking. Then click on OK.
On the Dial-Up Networking screen that appears, click on the More button.
Deselect O perator assisted or manual dialing by clicking on it. There should be no check mark next to the option.
Click on Dial.
The error message should no longer appear.
