Overview of VPN
VPN (which stands for "Virtual Private Network") uses a high-speed internet connection along with a VPN token to allow employees to contact the PeopleSoft network securely.
Note: As of September 30, 2004, Cisco VPN Client version 4.0.4(D) is the standard supported version of VPN client software. If you are on an earlier version, please update your software as soon as possible. See Eureka! document 54102 — Upgrade or install Cisco VPN Client software. To find out what version of the Cisco VPN software you are running, see Eureka! document 55175 — How to tell what version of Cisco VPN software you are using.
Remember that as an employee, you also have a responsibility to protect the security of our network at PeopleSoft, so please read all of the cautionary information relating to network security in the available documentation.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is technology that provides a secure connection by building an encrypted 'tunnel' from one network to another. When used over the Internet to the PeopleSoft network, it allows your standard PeopleSoft standard machine to use an existing Internet connection (like your cable modem at home) to connect to the PeopleNet. You create this connection, much like RAS, using a VPN client software that connects to our Internet VPN server. When establishing a connection, the VPN client will prompt you for login information, but unlike RAS, VPNs require secure one-time password codes. These passwords are generated by an RSA SecurID token.
A SecurID token is a product that generates the one time password code, it is about 1" x 2", has a liquid crystal display on one side, and can attach to a key chain. Approximately every 60 seconds, the token generates and displays a unique code to be used with the VPN client software. The token codes are useless after a fixed time period, making theft of a valid code difficult. Since access can only be gained with the SecurID token, the end user is solely responsible for any access gained to the network with their token. Sharing of the token with any other individual is strictly prohibited. All users who would like to use VPN at PeopleSoft will need to obtain a token, which can be done through a NorthStar Communications ticket. For more information on opening the ticket, see Eureka! document 55063 — How to request an RSA SecurID token.

VPN technology to "tunnel in" to the PeopleSoft network is available for PeopleSoft standard build workstations. The technology is not supported for personal home computers.
Check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to find out if they support the use of VPN. Every ISP is different, and Technical Support Operations does not know about every one of them, so please contact your provider directly.

Checklist for setting up your computer for VPN - includes list of available documentation
Here is a suggested checklist of how to set up your computer for VPN use:
You must have a standard PeopleSoft workstation to use for VPN.
Ask your manager if you can use VPN. Their approval is needed to obtain a SecurID token. Their prior knowledge of the request you make for a token can expedite the process.
Confirm that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) supports the use of VPN tunneling. Every ISP is different, and Technical Support Operations does not know about every one of them, so please contact your provider directly to find out.
Request a SecurID token. See Eureka! document 55063 — How to request an RSA SecurID token.
Once you receive your token, install the software from the VPN Package(Cisco VPN Client) page in the Software Library page and follow the instructions.
