How to ping another computer
"Pinging" an IP address can tell you if a particular computer is up and running. Generally, you would be pinging a server. You can ping either a name of a computer (example: ple-share-01) or the IP address of the computer (example: 207.135.40.131).
Click the operating system you are running and follow the detailed steps to ping a computer:
To ping an IP address or computer:
To open a DOS window, click on the Start menu, the on Programs, and then Command Prompt in the top part of the Programs menu.
Example: ping 207.135.40.131
You should get back a report:
"Pinging computer name or ip address with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from ip address: bytes=32 time< numberms TTL= number
Reply from ip address: bytes=32 time< numberms TTL= number
Reply from ip address: bytes=32 time< numberms TTL= number
Reply from ip address: bytes=32 time< numberms TTL= number"
This report means that the computer you are pinging is up and running.
If a computer is up and running, that does not necessarily mean that all drives on the computer are working.
If you get a message that says " Request timed out", there may be something wrong with the computer you are trying to ping. Try pinging it again, and be sure to check the name of the computer and your typing carefully.
