How to use PS RAS Connection Manager

Note: The legacy RAS (dial-up networking) and PeopleSoft RAS Connection Manager (also known as PSRC or PSRCM) are in the process of being retired. To standardize dial-up access, the integrated PeopleSoft company is deploying iPass and VPN as the dial-up solution. PS RAS Connection Manager helps you to use local numbers (where available) to connect to the PeopleSoft network via Dialup Networking (Dialup Networking is also called RAS, for "Remote Access Service"). You only need to use PS RAS Connection Manager when you first RAS into the PeopleSoft network, or if you have changed locations since the last time you RASed into the network. Otherwise, use Dialup Networking. To use PS RAS Connection Manager, choose a location:

How to use PS RAS Connection Manager within the US

Make sure there is a usable phone connection for you to use near by (use your modem tester to test the phone line). Connect your phone line to your machine in the appropriate port. Usually, there is a small picture of a telephone handset under the modem port.
Log onto your machine in standalone mode ( i.e., not RASed in and not connected to the network directly).
Launch the PS RAS Connection Manager from the icon on your Windows desktop (or click on Start, Programs, PS WinApps, PS RAS Connection Manager.)
On the left side of the screen, enter your user name, password, and network domain. Some information may already be filled in. Check to make sure that information is accurate.
At the upper right-hand corner of the screen, make sure that United States of America(1) is chosen in the Country or Region field.
Enter the area code of your current location in the Area code field.

Note: You are responsible to make sure you enter the correct information in this field!

Enter the phone number of your current location in the Phone number field.

If you must dial a number, such as 8 or 9 to get an outside line, enter that number in the Outside access field. Otherwise, leave this field blank.

Note : Some hotels use one outside access number (such as "9") for a local call and a different number (such as "8") for a long-distance call.

A Focal number, if one is available, appears. If one isn't available, you will be able to choose from a list of toll-free or other local phone numbers.

Note: If a number from a different area code appears, double-check the numbers you entered for your current area code and phone number. In some cases, a Focal number could be from another area code, but still be a local number. Remember that you are responsible for entering your area code and prefix number in accurately.

Click the Connect button.

PS RAS Connection Manager detects servers that are down, or a busy signal; it will dial its internal, built-in backup numbers for you. It will let you know if the situation requires that you to hang up and call back later.

When a connection is established, PS RAS Connection Manager will minimize itself on your task bar at the bottom of your screen.
Your N: and your P: drives will map after you have a successful connection. Listen for the phaser sounds to indicate a successful mapping.

You will be connected to the PeopleSoft network via RAS. Many of the tasks you can perform while on the network directly may also be performed via RAS, albeit a little more slowly. Since you are not fully authenticated on the network, DO NOT change your password while RASed in in this manner. ONLY change your password if you use Dial-Up Networking AND you checked the box "Log on using Dial-Up..."

To end a PS RAS Connection Manager session, the click on the Disconnect button on the PS RAS Connection Manager screen.

How to use PS RAS Connection Manager outside the US

At the upper right-hand corner of the screen, choose the country you are in in the Country or Region field.

If the country in which you are currently located is NOT listed, pick the country closest to you geographically.
Note: Be SURE to check with local phone company or front desk (if at a hotel) to find out how much you will be charged for the call! You are responsible for expensing the charges incurred. If you are unsure whether the costs can be expensed, please check with your manager before making the call.

If you must dial a number to get an outside line, enter that number in the Outside access field. Otherwise, leave this field blank.
A number(s) available for use for the chosen country appear at the lower right-hand corner of the PS RAS Connection Manager screen.
Choose one of the numbers by clicking on it once.
Click the Connect button.
