How to delete programs from the Start menu

Removing items from the Start menu should remove only the shortcut to the program, not the program itself.  If you want to remove the program from your computer you need to uninstall it.  For more information on uninstalling programs see document 69004 — How to uninstall and install software.

 

Click on the operating system for your machine:

Windows NT4

Windows 2000

 

 


Windows NT4

To delete items from the Start Menu follow these steps:

1. Click on the Start menu to open it.

2. Select Settings and then Taskbar.

3. Select the " Start Menu Programs" tab.

4. Select A dvanced. An "Exploring - C:\WINNT\Profiles\(your user name)\Start Menu" window will appear.   Note - you may notice a " Remove" button.  In Windows NT that button will allow you to remove only those programs and folders that are in your personal profile, not other start menu items.  If you want instructions on using the "Remove" button process, click here.

5. To remove a shortcut or folder, click once to highlight the item.   Press the { Delete} key.

6. You will get a "Confirm File Delete" window, click Y es to delete.

7. When you are finished deleting select File and then Close.

8. Click OK to close the Taskbar Properties window.

 

 

 


Using the "Remove" button to remove items from the Start menu

1. Click on Start menu to open it.

2. Select Settings, then Taskbar.

3. Select " Start Menu Programs" tab.

4. Click on the Remove button. A "Remove Shortcuts/Folders" window will appear.

5. Navigate through the drives and folders to find the program you want to remove. 

6. When you find the program, click once it to select it.  Click Remove.   When you are finished click on Close.

7. Click OK to close the Taskbar Properties window.

3. A Taskbar & Start Menu properties window will open. Select the " Advanced..." tab.
