Update Service Pack

Document number: 69026

It is important to keep your machine up-to-date with the Microsoft Windows Service Packs. Installing the current Service Pack — Service Pack 4 — now, at your convenience, assures minimal interruption and faster updates as new hotfixes are released. If you are not current with hotfixes, postponing installation will make future installations more time-consuming. Because of the size of the package this can only be done with a direct (office) connection. Installation may take up to 1 hour on a network connection. Some remote users may be able to oder a service pack update on CD, but availablity is very limited. See Eureka! document 69086 — How to order a Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 CD

A number of problems can be resolved by either re-installing or updating the Service Pack for your operating system. Typical problems that can be resolved this way are a loss of the suspend function, or shutdown problems. The message " Cannot connect to BIOS server" is caused when the Toshiba utility tries to setup a connection to the BIOS and it fails. If you are having suspend problems be sure to review review the information in document 39004 — Screen or machine shuts off — turn off energy saving feature.

To install the current Microsoft Windows Service Pack from the Software Library in Lotus Notes:

  1. Open Lotus Notes, then open the Software Library by clicking the bookmark link.

  2. Click the Standard Software Package Installs icon.

  3. Click By Package Name.  This view will probably already be showing as it is the default view.

  4. Scroll until you see the entry Microsoft Windows Service Pack and double click on it to open it.

  5. Print out and read through the instructions before starting.

When you have completed your procedure, you should have the correct Service Pack installed and advanced power management should no longer cause conflicts with your system if this issue was a problem with your machine.

Note: If suspend mode is missing from your machine after following the above procedure and you have an older model machine assume that suspend is not available for your machine.

If the problem continues to occur review Eureka! document 39004 — Screen shuts off - turn off energy star compliance feature.

For more information on suspend mode see Eureka! document 69032 — Suspend and resume mode problems.
