You can change the formatting of how most programs display currency, numbers, dates and times from the default English (USA) format to some other format. When you define a locale (geographic area and language) Windows will automatically adjust most formats such as numbers, currency, times and dates to a style appropriate for the location.  In most cases you will not need to change these items individually. Note: this is not what you want to do if all you want is a word or phrase in a different language.  If what you want is to type just a little using the characters in a different language look at how to insert special characters in the application you are using see document 69061 — How to use character map to insert special characters.

Windows presents these formats to various applications, although some applications may not use them.  If that occurs you will need to find out if the settings can be modified within the program itself. Also note that the new formats may not be applied to existing documents, but they will probably be applied to dynamic lists such as the date format in your Lotus Notes Inbox.

This process does not enable a new language to the keyboard.  To enable a new language to the keyboard, see document 39035 — How to add a language to the keyboard .

You must be an "Administrator" or "Power User" to change these settings. If you are on the machine issued to you then you should have Administrator privileges and you should be able to make any necessary changes. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Technical Support Operations before you change the settings.

Install formats according to location in Windows 2000.

1. Select Start menu, then Settings, then Control Panel.

2. Double-click on the Regional Options icon to open it.

3. Click on the General tab then click on the down arrow under the Your locale (location) box to select from the drop down list.  (What appears in the window is your current locale).

4. Click on Apply.

• If an "Insert Disk" window opens then:

1. Click OK. A "Files needed" window will open.

2. In the " Copy files from:" box type p:\build\ntfiles\i386 ( p:\build\w2kfiles\i386)

3. Click OK

5. Click OK to close the Regional  Options window.

3. In the Regional Options window click on the tab for the quality you want to change then click on the down arrow to select from the drop down list.  Note: The available choices will be influenced by your current locale as shown on the General tab.

4. Click on Apply.

3. Click OK.

5. Click OK to close the Regional Options window.

Your formats for that quality should reflect the changes you have made.
