When you attempt to shut down your machine you may find that the only selection offered is "log off ( username)".  This unusual condition seems to occur only on the Toshiba Portege 3110, so please report the problem if it occurs on a different machine.  To shut down without resolving the problem allow the machine to log off the user, then when the log on screen reappears select Shutdown.

To resolve the problem make some change that forces a hardware refresh.  An easy one to make is a change in screen resolution. 

To change screen resolution:

Note: Whatever setting you choose will affect all displays you use with your machine. The adjustability of the laptop screen is limited.  The "optimum" setting for the Portege 3110 laptop is 800 x 600. If you will probably want to change the settings back to 800 x 600 after you apply a different setting to force the hardware refresh. 

Select your operating system:

Windows NT 4.0

Windows 2000

Changing screen resolution on the Windows NT

1. Click the Start menu button and then select Settings, Control Panel.

2. In the Control Panel window double-click the Display icon.

3. Select the Settings tab.

4. In the " Desktop area" box is a slider that moves between "Less" and "More." Write down the current settings because you will probably want to restore them.

5. Put the mouse pointer on the slider and hold down the left mouse button. Drag the mouse pointer left to select another resolution.

6. Click on T est. A "Testing Mode" message box will pop up. Click OK and wait.

7. When the test screen goes away the "Testing Mode" message box will ask "Did you see the test bitmap properly?".

8. Select Yes.

9. Click Apply.  

• You may see a message that Windows will attempt to resize the desktop to the new resolution will appear. Click OK.

• Click Yes to keep the settings.

10. Click OK to exit the Display Properties.

11. Log off the machine, then when the log on screen reappears select Shutdown.

12. Reboot. 

Your shutdown screen should now have all selections available.   Please restore your display settings to the original 800 x 600 or it will look funny on the laptop display.  (Either overlapping or with a big black border).

6. Click Apply.  A window will open allowing you to either test the new setting, or cancel the change. Select OK.

7. When the test screen goes away the message box will ask whether you want to keep the new settings.

8. Select Yes.

9. Click OK to exit the Display Properties.

10. Log off the machine, then when the log on screen reappears select Shutdown.

11. Reboot. 

Your shutdown screen should now have all selections available.   Please restore your display settings to the original 800 x 600 or it will look funny on the laptop display.  (Either overlapping or with a big black border).
