How to request a rebuild of a computer

Document number: 75005

To "rebuild" a machine is to wipe it clean and reformat it. If you wish to change operating systems, you must rebuild the machine. You may also wish to do this when the machine has experienced several unexplainable crashes or a hard disk failure of some kind. Please open a NorthStar ticket so that your machine may be diagnosed properly.

If you already know that you need a rebuild of your machine, follow these steps:

  1. Run Connected Backup to make sure you have backed up any important files. See Eureka! document 11225 — How to start a manual backup.
  2. Launch NorthStar and log in, if necessary. For more information about launching NorthStar, see Eureka! document 70001 — How to create a ticket in NorthStar.

  3. On the left side of the screen, click on the Log Service Ticket link.

  4. On the contact screen, make sure the information is current and indicate how you would like to be contacted if there are any questions (the default is by phone, based on your internal phone number in the PeoplePeople Directory.)

  5. Click Next.

  6. Choose Workstation and click Next.

  7. On the screen that appears, choose Request Software Rebuild and click Next.

  8. On the next screen, fill in the information that is requested about the location and date for the rebuild to be performed, and computer information. Click Next.

  9. On the next screen, fill in the information that is requested about the computer. Be sure to fill in any special requirements for the rebuild.

  10. Click Finish.

  11. You may be contacted for more information and certain IDs or passwords.

You will be contacted as to when and where to take your machine for rebuilding. Please be aware that except in case of emergency, the entire rebuild process may take up to a few days.
