The basic call features of the Cisco 7940 IP phone are basically the same as with any standard analog phone.

Accessing voice mail.
Any of the following six options can be used to
place a new call:
- Lift the
handset and dial the number.
- Press a
line button and dial the number.
- Press the
speaker button and dial the number.
- Press the
headset button and dial the number.
- Press the
NewCall soft key and dial the number.
- Press the
Speed Dial button and dial the number.
Any of the following four options can be used to
answer a call:
- Lift the
handset.
- Press the
Answer soft key.
- Press the
Speaker button.
- Press the
headset button.
Any of the following three options can be used to
end a call:
- Hang up the
handset.
- Press the
EndCall soft key.
- Press the
speaker button.
To place a call
on hold:
- Press the
hold soft key while the call is active.
- To take the call off hold and return to the call, press the
resume soft key.
To
redial the most recently dialed phone number:
- Lift the handset or use the speakerphone and press the
redial soft key.
To
mute a call:
- Press the
mute button while the call is active.
- To disengage mute, press the
mute button again.
When using the speakerphone,
lifting the handset will also disengage mute.
To access
voice mail:
- Press the
Messages or
Envelope button and follow the voice instructions.
The red light on the handset lights up when a voice mail message is waiting. A message waiting icon is displayed next to its corresponding line appearance. The LCD will display the number of messages received.
Note: The message waiting indicator may not function in all locations. In the locations where it does not function, check the missed calls option to see if there are any messages waiting. For additional information, see Eureka! document
